We often say – or just think – that if something is old, it is outdated and that we have to get on with the age, but apart from this, if we are attending to a university which has been established for centuries, we change our mind and think different. We say, yes, I managed to get in and it is true when we are talking about this university. For that reason although it is told over and over again, we always have to tell it again because of its big importance. The university was relocated from Cluj (Kolozsvár) to Szeged, so the Jesuit College of Cluj which was established by István Báthory in 1581 is considered to be the predecessor of University of Szeged. It is more than 400 years. It was named to University in 1872. It has had many names ever since. By the year of 2000 the institution of higher education with the present-day faculties, named University of Szeged, was evolved which has a prestigious name, so it is a satisfaction to know that we attend to a university, about which has been heard in other countries too.

One of the 12 faculties of the university, the Faculty of Arts, has the most populous students, more than 6000 students spend their time here:

  • where the lecturers teach on traditions that date far back – their purpose is education of problem-solving thinking and broad-minded intellectuals,

(in other words, our lecturers try to educate us based on the experience of the old times and at the same time they try to achieve to use properly what we’ve learned so far; we have to admit, their job is not easy)

  • where the lecturers put an emphasis to research and scientific work,

(when we see that our lecturer wrote some books, then we are proud that we can learn from him)

  • where well-known people like Sándor Sík, Miklós Radnóti and Attila József taught and studied

(it also increases the value of our personality, - our ego - yes, I am attending this university too).

Szeged is a human-oriented city where due to the voluntary activity undertaken by university students - student self-government, film clubs, festivals and organization of other programs - the university has become a determined part of the city, intellectual centre of the region and cradle of famous researches. We do not feel it like for instance in Budapest, as if we have never been there at all. If for no other reason than that, we go to the TIK, where all of the students of all faculties in the city show up in order to learn, to drink a cup of coffee or just to chat.

The Faculty of Arts gives home to many research teams, graduate schools and other graduate training programs (http://www.arts.u-szeged.hu/kutatodoktoregyeb.html). The educational and research activity expands to a number of area of science – traditional arts graduate, social sciences and pedagogy. Here a human-oriented student can choose whatever he wants,  he can even obtain the Dr. title in front of his name and can even research later.

The guarantee of professional standard is provided by:

- academic qualification of the teachers,

- many years of teaching experience,

- international level, continued accreditation,

- foreign scholarships, European student scholarship (http://www.arts.u-szeged.hu/osztondij.html),

- learning and exam facilities,

- international relations of the faculty and their departments

- and exchanges with twin universities, foreign terms abroad.

 The structure of the faculty:

- The work of the faculty is directed by the dean who is helped by 3 deputy deans.

- Dean's Office: performs the official, administrative tasks of the faculty.

- Registry’s Department: performs the administrative tasks related to students’ studies and education.

The Faculty of Arts has 9 institutes and 35 departments within. (http://www.arts.u-szeged.hu/intezettanszek.html)

Mission, future prospects, aims:

The aim of Faculty of Arts – considering that it is the most important institution of higher education, and with the necessity of modernity - is that we become such people who know the traditions, who will educate their mind and who won’t just store the information, but who will use it in practice as well. If we take a better look, that is what they expect from us after finishing our studies. Let’s be educated, let’s have comprehensive knowledge in our professional field and moreover using our knowledge let’s show our best. That is why the faculty provides a high-level education in the field of faculty of arts and social sciences, because that is how we can get a notable degree.

Perhaps these do not lead us to particularly good jobs but develop us to a valuable, normal-minded and humane man.

Furthermore it emphasizes the continuous development and support of international relations in order to more effectively inject the domestic and international scientific results into the education and research, and to help the domestic scientific results to win international acknowledgement and support. It seeks to gradually increase the level of master and doctoral training and to provide a competitive degree.

The Faculty of Arts provides an opportunity to acquire easier the continuously growing universal knowledge. To this end, it initiates competence-based training programs which effectively assist the development of our personality, as well as the forming and strengthening of those skills, by which we become able to absorb and apply new knowledge.

In this way, it helps the university citizens to play an active part in society. Since there is no better feeling, than we claim that we have added something to the previous knowledge, especially when it is something outstandingly excellent.
